Origami postcards

Working in a print shop with a variety of equipment at my disposal, I found myself drawn to processes carried out via letterpress. As a means of showing what would be possible with diecutting, scoring, perforating and print in tight combination, I created a series of promotional postcards based around the idea of pre-scored and printed origami.

In addition to creating these postcards, I also staged the completed pieces for photography. One goal was to capture both the shape and texture of the folded objects. These were printed on an HP Indigo digital press, which yields a distinctly offset feel to not only the texture of its ink, but also its halftone pattern. These shots were able to accentuate that through a combination of close-up staging and shallow depth of field (which happen to feed into each other in terms of technique).

Related Projects

Origami postcards was in many ways a project pursued for its own sake, much like the two projects shown below. The first of these is a small booklet with glow-in-the-dark coating on the cover, allowing a point light source (eg. flashlight) to act as a sort of ephemeral magic paint brush. The second is a booklet where each page is a picture of the previous page. Creating this was algorithmic: assemble, disassemble, photograph, print, repeat. These were both personal projects (if that wasn't super clear already ;).
